HonorHealth Streamlines Patient Flow and Optimizes OR Scheduling

We have been able to do such wonderful things for throughput with Qventus. Qventus was really something very different with predictive analytics, machine learning, the closed-loop system, and resources that would help us drive change. Kim Post, EVP and Chief Operating Officer, HonorHealth

The Challenge

From an inpatient perspective, HonorHealth needed to address inefficiencies in its discharge planning in order to reduce length of stay (LOS) and create more inpatient bed capacity. Despite using built-in EHR functionality, they were experiencing inefficiencies in patient flow and were looking for additional capabilities that would enable them to operate efficiently and leverage real-time information.

After addressing the inpatient challenge, HonorHealth started looking for a way to strategically grow surgical case volume in order to fill its newly created inpatient capacity. The challenge was to improve OR scheduling, and create automated processes where possible, in order to improve block management, OR utilization, and resource alignment.

Qventus helps our frontline teams work at the top of their license by simplifying discharge workflows. That means less phone calls, less chasing down orders, and less chaos on the day of discharge for our patients and our staff. Ashleigh Gerhardt, VP of Network Operations and Emergency Services

The Qventus Solution

HonorHealth first implemented the Qventus Inpatient Solution to achieve its discharge planning and patient flow goals. The Qventus team worked with HonorHealth to assess its processes and identify opportunities and make recommendations on process design changes that would help standardize workflows and implement relevant automations.

To meet its perioperative growth goals, HonorHealth deployed the Qventus Perioperative Solution across its six hospitals. The implementation was done in waves, with Qventus’ team and HonorHealth’s team working hand-in-hand to ensure successful change management and implementation of the technology. Qventus teams collaborated with each clinic and office in order to fully understand their position and identify the best opportunity to drive adoption.

Perioperative

The perioperative solution helped HonorHealth surgeons and schedulers easily find and book OR time in seconds via a digital booking interface. This helped reduce unutilized OR time, enabling HonorHealth to schedule more cases overall.

In addition, intelligent block release nudges helped free up unused time weeks in advance, so schedulers could fill the time with best-fit cases. Machine learning algorithms predict which blocks are likely to go unused and send nudges to the block owner that provides context about the low likelihood of the time being used and the positive impact that releasing it would have on their block utilization rate. Then, once the block is released Qventus automatically offers the available time to the best-fit surgeon based on case type, surgeon preferences/history, and more.

Inpatient

Qventus has helped HonorHealth’s frontline teams improve discharge planning and reduce length of stay. One core feature that enabled this success is Disposition Intelligence, where localized machine learning algorithms auto-populate estimated discharge dates (EDD) throughout a patient’s stay, and identifies opportunities for earlier discharge or lower level of care discharges. This is done using existing EHR data, so care teams don’t need to add additional inputs.

In addition, Flow Prioritization uses machine learning to analyze patient and census data to determine the optimal sequence in which to complete orders that optimize patient flow. Thanks to this, HonorHealth has achieved a 7% increase in the completion of high-priority orders – which correlates to 0.4 fewer excess days.
